Newton's Cradle - A Classic Executive Office Gift
Named after, Sir Isaac Newton, Newton's cradle helps in demonstrating law of conservation of momentum and energy with the help of series of swinging spheres. When ball on one end is lifted and released, the resulting force travels through the line and pushes the last ball upward. This device is also known as executive ball clicker, Newton's balls, Newton's pendulum and Newtonian Demonstrator.

How Does the Promotional Newton's Cradle Work?
The Promotional Newton's cradle is a famous device, consisting of six identically sized metal spheres suspended on lines within a metal frame. The Newton's Cradle product is assembled so that the solid metal spheres/balls are just touching each other while they are at rest. Each of the spheres is attached to the frame of the Newton's Cradle by two wires or strings of exactly equal length angled away from each other. This ensures the sphere/ball pendulums' movements are restricted to the same plane.
If one ball of the Newton's Cradle is pulled away and is then allowed to fall back to its resting position, it makes contact with the first sphere in line and comes to a immediate stop. The sphere at the other end of the series has the momentum of the first ball transfered to it almost instantly and the result is that it swings in the arc expected of the first metal sphere in movement.
Many initial observers find this reaction visually intriguing and indeed the opposite of what they expect. If you bumped into one end of a row of people standing in line you would intuitively expect all the people to move, not just the last person in the row to acquire the available kinetic energy. The balls in the =middle of the group seem to be stationary. However the reality is that the newton's cradle device continues to work while the balls in the middle maintain an apparently rigid position. This is also apparently counter intuitive as the balls of the Newton's Cradle appear to be transmitting motion to other spheres in the assembly without themselves moving.
What is actually happening here is that the first sphere impact against its neighbour produces a shock wave which travels through the succession intermediate spheres/balls. A hard material such as steel is ideal for construction of the moving spheres in a Newton's Cradle device
The shock wave which transfers the kinetic energy between the iron spheres of a Newton's Cradle travels at the speed of sound. The time it takes for this energy wave to travel a few centimeters is too short for the casual observer to notice, as indeed is the and so is the minor physical distortion of the metal spheres as the newton device's shock wave passes through.
In reality, of course, none of these physical events has perfect energy efficiency. Kinetic energy is lost in the suspending lines attached to the frame, through friction of the surrounding air, in elastic deformation (warming) of the newton spheres, and through dispersal into the atmosphere by sound. The proof of the sound dispersal of energy is the clicking of the metal sphere/balls when they meet at speed. Toward the end of the oscillation of all the balls in the line on the Newton's Cradle , even the central balls in line up are jiggling marginally.
Additional excitement is possible by beginning with more than one ball moving. With two balls, the same two balls on the opposite side swing out and back in sympathy. This result is satisfyingly symmetrical, however one is give to wonder why a single opposite sphere may not move twice as fast, or four balls at a quarter speed of those which impacted at the other end? The simple answer in physics is that having the same number of spheres in motion on each side conserves both available energy and physical momentum of the spheres.
