Originating as work clothing to be worn over normal clothes, hence the ‘over all’ aspect of the name, perhaps as early as the late eighteenth century. Most overalls or coveralls did just that, extending from the trousers to the shirt. Bib and brace being another common term for a pair of overalls. Nowadays, however, such overalls are comfortable enough to be worn instead of other clothes. Combined with your brand or logo, such clothing today makes for great company promotion.
It was not until the twentieth century that coveralls became common as protective clothing for most workers. Such overalls or boiler suits (used by those working on the boilers of the then common steam engines) were made of heavy, thick material, which although protective, could be clumsy and certainly were hot. The traditional overall has had a wide range of uses. Women commonly wore overalls when they began working in the ammunition factories in England during World War One. While during the Spanish Civil War, Communist soldiers used boilersuits as part of their uniform. Aeronauts in the early days of flying, usually in unheated compartments, often wore specially designed one-piece overalls. And most have seen the coverall sported by Winston Churchill as he toured the London bombsites in World War Two.
