Gifts are probably always associated with holidays. Even if it is often said that gifts are not necessary, a special event or holiday would not be complete without gift giving. It is made even special for couples who have the other half of the coffee mug, sort of like a ring, or a friendship bracelet. In the personalization of those cheap coffee mugs, it is given a name, the giver’s own design perhaps. Anything to make promotional mugs stand out and be the only one in the world! So now this makes the generic mug not so generic after all. Best of all, personalization gave the recipient the assurance that the mug is truly for the recipient and that it was not just some gift that was re-gifted.
Coffee mugs and their personalisation was such a big hit that branded ones started coming out with the branded coffee that it preciously holds. Here, cheap coffee mugs are not so cheap anymore. It came with a name—a rather pricey tag with the name of the extra expensive coffee brands that mushroom the caffeine addicted business district. Now coffee mugs, beyond holding one’s morning coffee, become an instant souvenir from your favorite coffee shop. If a particular brand is the only coffee to touch your lips, the branded coffee mug should be the only mug holding it then. The coffee mug shouts to the world the coffee you are drinking. Why this has become an issue is another story. But this only goes to show that the mug, however very standard, is again a hit—on its beautiful generic-ness, its practicality, and its usefulness. |
